Korg Kronos 3 vs. Korg Kronos 2 – A gentle facelift instead of a revolution?

For years, the Korg Kronos has been one of the best-known and most powerful workstations on the market. With the announcement of the Korg Kronos 3, many musicians are asking themselves: What exactly has changed – and is it worth upgrading?
Full compatibility – a strong argument
One of the biggest advantages of the Kronos 3 is its complete compatibility with the Kronos 2 – in both directions . Anyone who has already created their own sounds, setlists, and combinations on the Kronos 2 can easily transfer them to the Kronos 3 .
At the same time, many of the new sounds of the Kronos 3 are also available for older Kronos models – meaning that Kronos 2 owners don't have to miss out on new sound possibilities.
The changes in detail
The Kronos 3 is not a fundamental redesign , but rather a subtle facelift . The biggest changes are:
- Improved touchscreen for better usability.
- New hardware components that result in a 60% faster boot process .
- Additional sounds , which are also available separately for older Kronos models.
This means that the basic structure of the Kronos remains unchanged – both in its operation and in its range of functions.
One advantage for musicians: A new Kronos is available.
Despite the minimal changes, one fact is crucial: there is now an official successor . Anyone who has been working with a Kronos for a long time and has been concerned about the availability of replacement devices or support can rest assured: the Kronos remains in the product line.
This means that musicians can still purchase a current workstation from the Kronos series if their existing device fails or needs to be replaced.
Conclusion: No real progress, but a confirmation of the series.
The Korg Kronos 3 isn't a revolutionary upgrade, but rather a gentle revision. Whether Korg will introduce more significant innovations in the future remains to be seen.
Nevertheless, the Kronos 2 – and all previous models – remains absolutely up-to-date . Anyone who owns a Kronos 2 therefore doesn't need to worry that their instrument is outdated.
The Kronos 3 primarily ensures the continued existence of the Kronos series – with slightly improved hardware and new sounds. Whether that's enough to justify an upgrade is a decision each individual must make.
What do you think of Kronos 3? Is it a worthwhile addition or a superfluous remake? Let us know in the comments!
